Superstars recall Ribera Steakhouse, bring back Zubaz

On the WWE’s recent tour of Japan, several Superstars took
part in a very special sports-entertainment tradition. They have the jacket and
full stomachs to prove it.

The Ribera Steakhouse is a landmark in the Land of the
Rising Sun. For years, Superstars have made pilgrimages to this small
steakhouse in Tokyo, where their predecessors have wined and dined.

Photographs of those who have passed through for a meal line
the tiny restaurant from floor to ceiling. Superstars sit down for a king-sized
helping of steak, rice and corn. When they’re finished, they become members of
an exclusive group when the restaurant’s proprietors present them with a satin coat
emblazoned with its bull’s head logo.

For some, like WWE Champion CM Punk, it’s a chance to follow
in the footsteps of their heroes. “I always remember looking at early wrestling
magazines when I was a wee little Punker and seeing guys in these Ribera
Steakhouse jackets and it became this elite group,” he told WWE.com.

“If you knew a guy that had a Ribera coat, that meant he did
a tour of Japan. It’s a coveted thing.”

While satin jackets are no longer trendy or part of mainstream
fashion, having been relegated to the retro lines of athletic clothing companies,
Ribera’s garments are a badge of honor in the world of sports-entertainment.

“It’s a milestone,” said Divas Champion Beth Phoenix, who
received hers during her first trip to Japan in 2009. “I’ve worn it several
times. It’s not the most Diva-esque of jackets, but it is something you wear
with pride. If you are in this business, you know exactly what that means.”

The Glamazon’s photo also got unique placement at the
establishment. “I [was] smiling like a cheeseball and they placed my picture
[on the awning outside the restaurant]. So, when you drive up, there’s Goldberg
and Beth Phoenix side-by-side.”

Getting a Ribera Steakhouse coat may have also driven a
wedge between Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins. Long Island Iced-Z tweeted a picture
of his new black and hot pink jacket, setting The Party Starter off.

“I just find it silly that he’s bragging about it when he
doesn’t even know what it is or the significance of it,” Hawkins said. “I’ve
known Zack longer than anyone in this company and he’s not a fan of Japanese
wrestling. He never watched it before in his life, so I find that tweet he put
out with [the jacket] very ironic.”

John Cena wears Zubaz pants in the ring on WWE's Japan tour.Even more upsetting to Hawkins was another fashion staple of
sports-entertainment’s past that was presented to several Superstars in addition
to the jackets: Zubaz pants.

“They brought us steak and then they brought us Zubaz. It
was awesome,” Punk said.

The brightly colored, baggy zebra print pants were made
famous, in part, by WWE Hall of Famers The Road Warriors in the early 1990s and
became an essential part of a Superstar’s wardrobe, along with, yes, fanny
packs.

Today’s Superstars mostly joked about the loud pants,
thinking they would remain a relic of the past. Then, they put them on.

“They’re really, really comfortable,” The Straight Edge
Superstar admitted.

Hawkins agrees. Though he didn’t get them from Ribera, The
Party Starter bought a pair of Zubaz and wore a fanny pack as part of his
Halloween costume. “Zubaz pants are so comfortable, the fanny pack is so
convenient, all your stuff is right there,” he explained. “I get what [former
Superstars] were thinking at the time. Convenience and comfort.”

During the last show of the tour, John Cena may have
officially signaled the return of Zubaz to sports-entertainment. Wearing his
Ribera Steakhouse jacket to the ring, the leader of the Cenation did battle in
a pair of red and white Zubaz.

“The tour was exhausting, I wanted to do it to pick up
morale and give everyone something to talk about,” Cena said.

For Punk, it may become a part of his regular attire.
“Zubaz, fanny packs, Ribera jacket, maybe sunglasses indoors, high tops untied.
It’s an homage to my elders,” added the WWE Champion.

A broski's sacrifice

The WWE Universe will say what they will about John Cena, but on WWE Raw SuperShow, the 10-time WWE Champion proved that if he is one thing, it is selfless.

After defeating Zack Ryder to earn a spot in the WWE Championship Match at WWE TLC, a visibly distraught Long Island Iced-Z couldn’t believe he lost a U.S. Title opportunity. With his friendship in question, Cena marched to Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis’ office and relinquished his spot in WWE TLC’s main event for Ryder to have another chance to earn a U.S. Title bout. The reason is simple, Cena sees a great deal of potential in the young Superstar and wants him to have his fair chance.

1311367419001|02:24“Zack Ryder is one of those Superstars that has the drive to either go down swinging or be noticed,” Cena said. “He’s the first Superstar in a long time, along with CM Punk, that will do anything to show people they have the passion for this business.”

Ryder’s second chance to earn a U.S. Championship Match seemed to be too daunting a task for the Long Island native. World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry was beyond prepared to induct Ryder into the Hall of Pain. However, Cena again proved his loyalty and selflessness by helping Long Island Iced-Z secure the victory.

The self-proclaimed Internet Champion’s rise in popularity can be attributed to his use of social media and the fan-favorite YouTube show “Z! True Long Island Story.” There’s no denying his impact when legions of followers amongst the WWE Universe all exclaim “Woo! Woo! Woo!” in unison with Ryder. Long Island Iced-Z’s also spearheaded a ground-breaking Twitter petition topped off at nearly 25,000 names, one of them being Cena himself.

Cena understood what was being asked of him when Mr. Laurinaitis presented the possibility of Ryder receiving another chance to face U.S. Champion Dolph Ziggler. An accomplished ring warrior, the Cenation leader knows the support of other WWE Superstars is crucial in being successful.

1312693145001|00:46“No one has thrown Ryder a lifeline,” Cena explained. “I am participating in one of the biggest matches in history on April 1, with or without the WWE Title.  I’m confident I’ll get another chance, but Zack may not.”

When he debuted in WWE in 2002, a rookie Cena answered an open challenge from Kurt Angle. While Angle came out victorious, Superstars took notice of the young and ambitious West Newbury, Mass., upstart and went out of their way to show their approval of what at the time the future Cenation leader referred to as “ruthless aggression.”

“I was fortunate enough to have individuals stick up for me early in my career,” Cena explained. “I wouldn’t be where I am if it was not for those opportunities.”

Of course, Ryder’s U.S. Title Match at WWE TLC came after Cena helped Long Island Iced-Z defeat the World Heavyweight Champion. But the 10-time WWE Champion does not live in fear of being inducted into Henry’s Hall of Pain when they battle at the special three-hour WWE Raw SuperShow.

1311399829001|03:55“Mark’s a big boy, but I wouldn’t get into any business that I didn’t think I could handle,” Cena said.

Love him or hate him, thanks to the Cenation leader’s sacrifice, the WWE Universe will see Zack Ryder finally challenge Dolph Ziggler for the United States Title at WWE TLC. Will Cena’s effort be for naught, or will the Internet Champion become the U.S. Champion? Find out at WWE TLC, Sunday Dec. 18 at 8/7 p.m. CT only on pay-per-view.

WWE Championship Triple Threat TLC Match

WWE Champion CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz will square off in
a Triple Threat Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match with the WWE Title on the
line. Only one man can leave a winner when the current and two former WWE Champions meet in the first-ever Triple Threat TLC Match for the WWE Championship at WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, live on pay-per-view Sunday, Dec. 18.

Executive Vice President
of Talent Relations and Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis announced
this high-octane match where the Superstars will use tables, ladders and chairs as weapons and as tools to reach the WWE Title, which will be suspended some 20 feet in the air over the ring. Dangerous, harrowing and thrilling, TLC matches push competitors to the limit physically and mentally as they battle at dizzying heights in their quest for squared circle immortality.

The Miz and Del Rio had to defeat two SmackDown Superstars - Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan, respectively - on Raw Supershow to earn their spots in the WWE TLC Match. While John Cena was named as another participant, he gave up his chance at the WWE Title to give his friend, Zack Ryder, an opportunity to earn a U.S. Title Match against Dolph Ziggler.

CM Punk celebrates his WWE Championship win over Alberto Del Rio with fans at Madison Square Garden.Since CM Punk won the WWE Championship from Alberto Del Rio
at Survivor Series (PHOTOS), The Mexican Aristocrat has been pining for an opportunity
to get the title back. Although he was unsuccessful in his first bid to recapture the WWE Championship, Del Rio
can look forward to another crack at The Second City Savior, along with another
dangerous former champion.

The Miz, the third competitor in the Triple Threat Match, is
flying solo after separating from tag team partner R-Truth. After The Rock and
John Cena defeated The “Awesome Truth” at Survivor Series, the Cenation leader
confronted The Miz and R-Truth. He played mind
games on the underhanded pair, culminating in them turning on each other and
Miz blasting Truth with a brutal Skull Crushing Finale on the steel entrance
ramp. (PHOTOS)

A loner again, The Awesome One looks to regain the WWE
Championship and then get revenge on Cena. Not one to be limited to one
rivalry, The Miz attacked CM Punk. Having to defend himself
from Del Rio and The Miz, Punk must feel like he’s being assailed on all sides;
and that includes certain WWE management.

The Miz is never at a loss for words as he again roves the WWE landscape as a loner.John Laurinaitis has been having difficulties with the title holder. “The Voice of the Voiceless” has already promised change and
overhaul as he continues his second reign as WWE Champion (PHOTOS). This does not
appear to sit very well with the Interim GM, who is unable to even say "CM Punk" and "WWE Champion" in the same sentence. Laurinaitis placing Punk in such a difficult and grueling match is certainly a questionable decision.

All bets are off when WWE Champion
CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz
step into the ring for a Triple Threat Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match on Dec. 18. No matter which Superstar is victorious, the WWE Universe will see exciting, high-flying action.

Why ‘X-Pac’ Was Backstage At RAW Monday, Steve Austin/Jericho To Roast Zakk Wylde

The reason why Sean “X-Pac” Waltman was backstage at RAW Monday night was to do a two-hour interview for a new 15-episode WWE Network series that will be focusing on the Monday Night Wars. The series will reportedly have a VH1-esque feel to it with clips from the Monday Night Wars playing with various wrestlers commenting on their reactions to that particular moment in history.

Both WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Chris Jericho will be participating in the roast of rock star Zakk Wylde on January 19 at the Grove in Anaheim, California. The show will be hosted by America’s Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne. Austin will be joined with Ozzy Osbourne, Scott Ian, and Jim Norton as the roasters, according to Entertainment Weekly

SmackDown Spoilers: Two TLC Matches Announced, Big Heel Turn

As rumored last week, WWE officially added Kaitlyn to Divas of Doom faction featuring Beth Phoenix and Natalya at tonight’s SmackDown! tapings in Jacksonville, Florida. Kaitlyn turned heel on her partner AJ during a tag team match against Natalya and Phoenix.

Also at tonight’s tapings, it was officially announced that Booker T will be making his in-ring return against Cody Rhodes for the Intercontinental Championship at the TLC pay-per-view on Dec. 18. Booker T last competed in a match on WWE TV on the RAW episode June 6 against Jack Swagger, which Booker T won via countout. Other than that match, he has not competed in a singles match on WWE TV since 2007.

UPDATE: Randy Orton also defeated Dolph Ziggler in the main event of the tapings in a beat the clock match and earned the right to determine his opponent at TLC. He decided to face Wade Barrett in a Tables Match.

WWE SmackDown Spoilers For This Friday (12/9/11)

Mikel is at tonight’s WWE SmackDown! tapings from Jacksonville, Florida, which airs this Friday on SyFy, and has sent along the following notes and results from the show:

Tables, ladders and chairs are set up around the ring to promote next weekend’s TLC pay-per-view. Out first is Lilian Garcia, who is making her return to the company as the permanent SmackDown! ring announcer, as noted previously.

The announcers come down but Booker T is attacked from behind by Cody Rhodes. Lilian speaks to the crowd about her return but Cody interrupts her and says he will be the announcer tonight. It is announced that tonight’s show will have a series of Beat The Clock Matches.

(1) Wade Barrett defeated Ezekiel Jackson.

(2) In Divas action, the team of Beth Phoenix and Natlaya defeat Kaitlyn and AJ. After the match-up, Kaityln ended up turning on AJ and joined Natalya & Beth’s Divas of Doom faction.

Backstage, Money in the Bank winner Daniel Bryan is interviewed by Josh Matthews about losing to Mark Henry inside a Steel Cage Match last week and not winning World Title. Bryan called out Michael Cole and went to confront him, but Cody Rhodes ended up stopping and attacking him.

(3) Ted DiBiase defeated Jinder Mahal. The match was said to not have gone over well with the crowd.

In an in-ring segment, Big Show and Mark Henry trash talk each other. However, Henry offers Big Show a handshake. Henry then insists that Show isn’t the monster that we used to know him as. This causes Big Show to get offended by the comments and assaulting Henry with a steel chair.

(4) Sheamus defeated David Otunga in a quick bout.

The company then aired the “It Begins” ad that we saw last night on RAW featuring the words “Look within.” After the ad played in front of the audience, the Jacksonville crowd started a huge “Y2J” chant.

(5) Zack Ryder defeated Heath Slater. Ryder was over with the crowd. He reportedly earned one of the top babyface reactions of the night by far.

(6) Cody Rhodes defeated Daniel Bryan via disqualification after Booker T got into the ring and attacked Rhodes.

Backstage, Teddy Long and Aksana are having another segment together when Cody Rhodes barges in and demands a match against Booker T. Long agrees and makes the match for the TLC pay-per-view for the Intercontinental Championship.

(7) Randy Orton defeated Dolph Ziggler with 2 seconds left on the clock to beat the clock. He decided that he would have a tables match against Wade Barrett at TLC.

John Cena Explains Recent Japan Outfit, The Rock Set For Michael Bay Film

In a website, John Cena explains why he the Ribera Steakhouse jacket and the Zubaz pants at the last night of the two-night tour of Japan last week. “The tour was exhausting, I wanted to do it to pick up morale and give everyone something to talk about,” Cena said. WWE Champion CM Punk also weighed in on the significance of the jacket, “If you knew a guy that had a Ribera coat, that meant he did a tour of Japan. It’s a coveted thing.”

The Rock confirmed on Twitter today that he will be taking part in the Michael Bay film Pain and Gain, which is a bodybuilding comedy movie that will begin production in April 2012. Photos: Batista Promotes ‘The Scorpion King 3′ Sporting New Look

Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dave Batista was recently in Los Angeles promoting his new film The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption, which is the third installment in Universal Studios’ The Scoropion King series. The Scorpion King is the same movie franchise that gave The Rock his big movie industry break in 2002. Batista will be appearing in the movie as Agromael.

Batista seems to have lost significant weight since he left WWE in May of 2010 and is now sporting a mohawk, but seems to have bulked up since his recent photos of him have emerged looking even smaller than he appears in the photo below.
