WWE No Way Out 2012 Results : Divas Championship > Layla Vs. Beth Phoenix

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – It was another day, another defining performance for the reigning Divas Champion.

Picking up at the IZOD Center where the two rivals left off one month ago at WWE Over the Limit, Layla produced another strong effort at No Way Out to successfully defend her coveted butterfly-emblazoned title against Beth Phoenix. The British bombshell withstood a fierce assault from The Glamazon and connected a timely Lay-out neckbreaker to seal the victory. (PHOTOS)

Tempers flared in the early goings as both Layla and Phoenix tried to subdue each other’s spirit in the middle of the ring. The Fabulous Firebird followed a brutal boot to Layla’s abdomen with taunts about the champion’s worthiness to be in the ring, while the Divas Title holder swiped Phoenix’s headpiece and proceeded to parade in and out of the ring with it.

However, it was Layla’s resiliency that ultimately helped her ground The Glamazon. She reversed an impressive Gorilla Press attempt by Phoenix into a DDT and later connected a powerful neckbreaker to put the challenger away.

Thirteen months removed from the ACL and MCL injuries that knocked her out of action for nearly a year, Layla now looks as strong as ever, and appears ready to rumble with any Divas aspiring for her championship gold.

No Way Out 2012 » Matches » Layla vs Beth Phoenix (Divas Championship)

At No Way Out, WWE Divas Champion Layla will have the opportunity to extend her pay-per-view winning streak to three, but to do so she’ll have to topple the Diva who pinned her on the June 11 edition of Raw SuperShow, Beth Phoenix.
The championship bout, a rematch from WWE’s Over the Limit pay-per-view last month, holds much intrigue for the Divas division, which The Glamazon dominated for more than half a year. As impressive as Phoenix’s time atop the division was, however, the absence of one Diva during that period – Layla – was particularly noticeable.
The beautiful Brit scored an important victory over The Glamazon in May, just one month after triumphantly returning from knee surgery that put her out of action for nearly a year. Though Layla will look to bolster her reign (which is her first) on June 17, Phoenix will be on a quest to recapture the championship gold. Her 204-day run with the title – the second longest reign in the history of the Divas division – ended dubiously as Phoenix suffered a severe ankle sprain en route to losing to Nikki Bella on the April 23 Raw SuperShow.
Though Phoenix was originally slated to face Bella at the following weekend’s Extreme Rules event, The Fabulous Firebird was deemed medically unfit for competition. Her injury paved the way for Layla to make her surprise – and victorious – comeback, in which she dethroned Bella.
The Over the Limit match will undoubtedly be fresh in the mind of both Divas when they step into the ring at No Way Out. In fact, it was her familiarity with Phoenix’s offense that enabled Layla to skirt past The Fabulous Firebird in the first place. The back-and-forth encounter saw Phoenix use her trademark powerhouse attack and Layla leverage her speed and agility.
More noteworthy, perhaps, was that Layla amazingly managed to escape The Fabulous Firebird’s patented Glam Slam before connecting with her Lay-out neckbreaker for the win.
“I was scared … I’ve been hit with it a few times,” Layla said of the Glam Slam in a post-match WWE.com exclusive video. While conceding her win was unlikely to quiet the outspoken and ever-confident Phoenix, Layla also described Phoenix’s tactic of targeting Layla’s newly healed knee during the match as “cheap.”
Since losing that bout, however, The Glamazon appears intent on reasserting her presence in a division that was once hers to dominate. On the first Raw following Over the Limit, Phoenix made short work of a game Kelly Kelly, and on the June 11 edition of Raw, she won a mixed-tag match by pinning Layla with the Glam Slam. Will the outcome be the same at No Way Out?

WWE Over The Limit 2012 Results > WWE Divas Championship Match > Layla (c) Vs. Beth Phoenix –

RALEIGH, N.C. – Former Divas Champion Beth Phoenix came to WWE Over the Limit looking to reestablish herself as the alpha female in WWE. Instead, she suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of the current titleholder, Layla. (PHOTOS)

It has been a precipitous decline for Phoenix, who just over a month ago complained to WWE.com that there were no worthy challengers to her title before predicting she would be a dominant champion forever.

How quickly things can change.

Phoenix lost the butterfly-emblazoned belt to Nikki Bella on the April 23 edition of Raw SuperShow after suffering a severely sprained ankle. Unable to compete at Extreme Rules, The Glamazon was replaced by a shocking last-minute alternate – Layla – who returned to WWE after a yearlong absence to astonishingly win the title.

With a fully healed ankle and a desire to regain her place at the summit of WWE’s Divas division, The Glamazon battled Layla at WWE Over the Limit for the title she once held for more than six months.

However, The Fabulous Firebird’s bid for a second Divas Championship was foiled by Layla. Surviving Phoenix’s trademark aggression and powerhouse attacks, the British-born beauty was able to use her speed and agility to mount her own offense. The Glamazon focused her attacks on Layla's injured right knee, but she was unable to keep the champion down. After narrowly avoiding a Glam Slam attempt, Layla nailed Phoenix with a Lay-out neckbreaker out of nowhere to get the pin for an impressive and emotional win.

Although Phoenix performed admirably and nearly recaptured the title, it’s back to the drawing board for the former titleholder. Meanwhile, the tough and gutsy Layla has another successful title defense under her belt, and there’s no telling what’s next for the surging Divas Champion.

Tamina makes it into the ring at 8, and Beth continues the assault. Beth applies a headlock submission to Tamina, Tamina counters and hits Beth with the Samoan Drop. tamina goes to the top rope for the Superfly Splash, but Beth recovers and hits Tamina with a superplex.

The Divas make it to their feet and start to trade blows before Tamina gets the upper hand. Tamina hits Beth with a splash in the corner, followed by a super kick to the face. Tamina gets Beth into position for the Superfly Splash and successfully executes. Tamina goes for the pin, but Beth kicks out at two.
